“You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 2:1, NIV
I used to think God’s grace was a one-time gift I received when I first believed in Jesus. After all, the Bible teaches that we are saved and forgiven by His grace (Ephesians 1:7–8; 2:8). But grace is more than a one-time gift. It is the gift that keeps on giving. Even though we still make mistakes and struggle with sin, God continues to pour out His grace and forgiveness throughout our lives. Even more, we are called to be strong in God’s grace.
In the Bible, the word translated as “grace” is “chais.” Charis means not only grace, but unmerited kindness and favor, a gift, benefit, blessing, privilege,
Think of grace like a set of Russian nesting dolls that never ends. Artists create and hand-paint these beautiful wooden dolls so that when you open them, a smaller version appears inside. “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” (John 1:16, ESV).
In fact, God has given us so much grace that we can share it. When we share God’s grace through love, joy, and encouragement, God’s blessing keeps multiplying in a continuous cycle. “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8, NIV).
But even more, God’s grace strengthens us and helps us do His work.
While imprisoned in a Roman jail, Paul wrote his second letter to Timothy to encourage and strengthen him as he faced ministry challenges. Timothy was leading the church in Ephesus, where he had to combat false teachings and pass the gospel message to future generations.
As Paul encouraged Timothy, he wrote, “You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2:1, NIV)
This verse gives the word grace a whole new meaning. Paul was asking Timothy to rely on the Lord’s limitless grace to fulfill his calling, stand firm, and overcome trials despite discouragement and opposition. Paul knew Timothy needed more than willpower. He needed to draw on the divine strength found in God’s grace.

Grace, then, is more than salvation and forgiveness. God’s grace is His enabling power and strength to live the Christian life and fulfill the purpose and plans God has designed for us. Grace is a strength that comes from the Lord, not oneself. It is a constant and sufficient resource. That’s why God’s Word tells us, “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness” (2 Peter 1:3).
Friend, it’s true–we are strong in God’s grace. We already have everything we need to live a Godly life because we have God’s never-ending gift of grace. So, today, let’s lay hold of grace and rely on it in everything we do.
Dear Father God, thank you for your never-ending grace. When I think of what your gift means, I am truly in awe of your love. Your grace is a gift I could never earn. I thank you and praise you for the peace and strength it continues to bring to my soul every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
