Stress and anxiety don’t usually knock politely. They creep in quietly until it feels like they’re running our lives. We live in a fast-paced society that encourages us to do more, be more, make more, and have more. We try to hold it all together and appear capable and confident. But inside, we feel overworked and overwhelmed. So we look for a quick fix: vitamins, supplements, energy drinks, or medication. We try anything to help us keep going, striving, and achieving. But what our souls really crave is to slow down, find peace, and build resilience.
It is possible to naturally manage stress and anxiety, slow down, and build resilience. And it doesn’t have to cost much money either. Let’s begin by looking at what science has to say.
Serotonin and Cortisol
God created everyone in a unique and miraculous way. He gave us bodies with beautifully designed organ systems that work in harmony. He also gave us cells that can heal and regenerate. God even placed a natural chemical within us called serotonin. It helps stabilize our mood and emotions. Increasing our serotonin can help us feel calmer, happier, and more focused.
Our bodies also have a stress hormone called cortisol. Stress elevates cortisol. This can lead to anxiety, fatigue, poor sleep, weakened immunity, digestive issues, and increased inflammation.
Think of the brain like a seesaw. Serotonin is on one side, and cortisol is on the other. When we’re constantly overwhelmed, the cortisol (stress) side stays stuck in the air. This makes it harder for serotonin to work effectively. To find relief without medication, we need to lower cortisol and increase serotonin.

Ways to Naturally Manage Stress and Anxiety & Build Resilience
The good news is, you don’t have to stay stuck in a constant cycle of stress. As you make small, intentional changes, you can support the way God designed your body to function. Here are some ideas to naturally lower stress, boost serotonin, and “crush” cortisol. These steps will help you build lasting resilience for whatever life throws at you.
Change Your Diet
The Bible teaches us to honor God by caring for our bodies: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Eating healthy is one practical way to do this, as it supports physical health, reduces stress, and builds resilience.
A nutrient-dense diet helps lower cortisol and signals to your brain that you are safe. The gut produces 90–95% of the body’s serotonin. Eating probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kimchi, and kefir can help support healthy serotonin levels.
Your body also makes serotonin from tryptophan. Tryptophan is an amino acid your body cannot produce on its own. Pairing high-protein foods like turkey, eggs, or salmon with complex carbohydrates can help your body deliver tryptophan to the brain more effectively. Try oats, brown rice, or sweet potatoes with these protein-rich foods.
Finally, foods rich in B6, B12, magnesium, and zinc can further support this process.
Get Adequate Sleep
Getting enough sleep helps regulate mood and support immunity. It also allows your body to repair itself. Aim for 7–9 hours each night to promote healthy brain and body function.
When stress makes it hard to fall asleep, try going to bed at the same time each night. Turn on white noise or quiet music. Both are available for free on your phone.
You might also consider using a diffuser with calming essential oils, such as chamomile. This can help create a peaceful environment.
Rest in the Lord
The Lord doesn’t call us to strive endlessly; He invites us to rest in Him, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28, NIV).
In our world that glorifies busyness, God gently whispers, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). We can be confident that when we rest in the Lord, we can trust His strength and abilities.
Pray
Praying helps us find peace by releasing our burdens about the people, places, and things we can’t control. Surrendering our cares to God makes room to trust Him and His good plans for us.
God’s Word reminds us, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7, NIV).
Use Imagery
Close your eyes and imagine a peaceful place—a quiet beach, a forest, or a serene meadow.
Feel the breeze on your skin. Listen to the sounds around you, like birds singing or leaves rustling.
Let this moment of calm remind you of God’s presence and His handiwork: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1).
Breathe
Deep breathing is a powerful way to calm the body and mind by feeding oxygen to the brain. Try to slow your breathing to 6 breaths per minute.
You can even focus on God during deep-breathing exercises, since our breath comes from Him. “He himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.” (Acts 17:25, NIV).
- Close your eyes and breathe in God’s presence, love, and peace for 4 seconds.
- Hold your breath for 4 seconds while being still.
- Then breathe out for 4 seconds, picturing yourself letting go of stress and anxiety.

Go out into God’s creation
Take a walk and fill your lungs with fresh, clean air. Get outside and spend some time in nature. Seeing all that God has created can help you rest, relax, and nourish your soul.
As Job says, “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?” (Job 12: 7-9, NIV).
Get Morning Sun
Scientists recommend getting 10–20 minutes of morning sunlight within the first 30 minutes of your day. Morning sunlight helps wake up your mind and body. It can also lift your mood and set a positive tone for the day. Sunlight also helps your body settle into a natural rhythm for sleep and alertness.
The Bible tells us, “Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun” (Ecclesiastes 11:7, NIV).
Sit by a body of water
Research shows that watching waves or gentle ripples can bring a deep sense of calm, quiet the mind, and reduce stress.
This kind of peace reflects the way God cares for us. As David writes, “He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul” (Psalm 23:2–3, NIV).
Star gaze
Taking a few minutes to look up at the stars creates awe and wonder, helping your mind shift away from stress and worry. Research shows that gazing at the night sky can reduce stress and support a calmer, more positive mood.
Stargazing fills us with awe and wonder. It reminds us of the beauty of God’s creation and our Father’s loving concern. As the Psalmist declares, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (Psalm 8:3, NIV
Do Aerobic Exercise
Aerobic exercise, like brisk walking, running, or dancing, reduces anxiety and improves overall mood. It also strengthens resilience. Exercise helps your body handle daily stress and challenges.
Worship is a powerful way to do this. The Bible encourages us, “Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel and harp” (Psalm 149:3, NIV).
Laugh
Laughter isn’t just enjoyable. It’s also good for your health. It lowers stress, boosts your mood, and strengthens the immune system.
Laughing can also help us build resilience. It creates a mental and emotional buffer against life’s challenges.
As Proverbs reminds us, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22, NIV).

Cuddle and Hug
Physical touch can calm the nervous system. Hugging a loved one or cuddling a pet can also increase feelings of safety and connection. These simple acts can help manage stress and build resilience. Even if you live alone, you can close your eyes and imagine God hugging you.
This beautiful verse paints a vivid picture: “His massive arms are wrapped around you, protecting you. You can run under his covering of majesty and hide. His arms of faithfulness are a shield keeping you from harm” (Psalm 91:4, TPT).
Make a Gratitude List
Write down 3–5 things you’re grateful for each day. Gratitude can increase your sense of calm and well-being. It can also shift your perspective.
For this reason, Paul reminds us not only to pray, but to give thanks. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7, NIV).
Listen to Soothing Music and Worship
Calming music or worship can affect your mood and mental clarity. It can quiet racing thoughts and ease tension. It can also create space to focus on God’s presence.
Worship music, in particular, can draw your heart toward gratitude and trust, reminding you that God is in control. The Bible tells us to “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth” (Psalm 96:1, NIV).
Mindful Grounding Techniques
Meditation and taking a “mindful minute” can help us pause and center ourselves during stressful situations.
The Bible shows us that meditating on God’s Word brings stability, peace, and prosperity. “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (Joshua 1:8).
Practicing a grounding technique can help you pause, refocus, and invite God’s peace into a stressful moment. Here is a quick and easy one.
5-4-3-2-1 Pray
This exercise engages your senses and promotes calm. Take a moment to notice and list:
- 5 things we can see,
- 4 things we can hear,
- 3 things we can feel,
- 2 things we can smell, and
- 1 thing we can taste.
- Whisper a short prayer, asking God to fill you with His peace.
Enjoy Hobbies and Have Fun
Take time to do things you enjoy. Read a book. Create art. Cook a favorite meal. Enjoy a hobby.
Doing things that bring you joy can help you relax, lift your spirits, and gain perspective on life’s challenges.
In fact, the Bible teaches us to have fun and rejoice each day: “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24, NIV).

A Word of Encouragement
Friend, small, intentional steps can make a difference.
As you care for your body, mind, and soul, you can begin to naturally manage stress and anxiety and build resilience.
I pray that you will also experience God’s peace, joy, and strength. May you feel ready to face whatever comes your way.
