Dear God, I’m Stressed Again . . .

Dear God, I'm Stressed Again

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

Life can be very stressful. There are projects, deadlines, activities, and an endless list of things we must do on any given day. Stress happens to the best of us. Unfortunately, some of us are more prone to it than others. I know I am.

Recently, I woke up from a bad dream feeling stressed yet again. In my mind were all the things I’d done wrong and all the things I needed to do. So, I cried out to God for help. Yet that anxious feeling remained as I dragged myself out of bed.

But this is what I love about God. He meets us right where we are. I opened my daily devotional, and the message was about anxiety. I turned on some Christian music, opened my Bible, and heard gentle reminders of truth I already knew but was choosing to forget. So, I stopped to thank God. I asked Him to forgive me for trying to control everything in my life. But most importantly, I told Him I trusted him.

So how do we find peace in a stressful life? Try to remember these three things when you are stressed:

  1. The only thing we can control is the present.
    • The past can’t be changed. Looking back at mistakes gives the enemy a foothold to lie about our worth and steal our peace.
    • Looking ahead and thinking of all the things we should do in the future is forgetting that God is the one who is really in control.
    • Dwelling on these is a waste of time and energy. So, when we wake up stressed, we can try to visualize God handing us His beautifully wrapped gift of the present.
  2. We can surround ourselves with God’s Word and truth for encouragement and hope.
    • It protects our minds. “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV).
    • It restores our souls (Psalm 23: 3).
    • It directs our steps (Psalms 119:105, Proverbs 16:9).
  3. We can pray.
    • “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7, NIV).

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for giving me today, one of your perfect gifts. Help me fix my eyes on you and your promises about who I am and the wonderful things you have in store for my future. Your Word says that if we acknowledge you in all our ways, then you will make our paths straight (Romans 15:13). I trust you to do that today and every day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

    Trust Is Letting Go

I am unfortunately prone to a pattern of giving my problems to God, then immediately picking them back up and refusing to let them go. Over the years I have e learned that God doesn’t always answer my prayers when and how I ask, I’ve also seen how He always shows up and acts on my behalf. In fact, when I look back on my life I see countless times where He has worked His good plans even out of seemingly bad situations. Yet, my obsessive need to find a solution on my own persists. Instead, I need to trust God. Trust is letting go.

    God Is Never Far

Have you ever felt that God has turned His back on you? Maybe you’re walking through excruciating pain and loss, and it seems like He’s nowhere to be found. Perhaps you’ve made mistakes and run from Him in guilt or fear. Or maybe you’ve followed the world’s ways and turned your back on God, and now you feel certain He must have done the same to you. But friend, no matter how it feels—God is never far.

    Follow God, Not Your Heart

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”  Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV) People often advise us to follow our hearts if we want to be happy in life. Following your heart is an idiom, meaning…

    When Your Heart is Breaking

What do you do when your heart is breaking and you can’t understand? Yesterday, a close friend passed away. He’d been in a motorcycle accident and had massive internal bleeding and injuries. But despite the best efforts of the ICU doctors, and being surrounded by praying friends and family for four days, his body was too tired to fight any longer. When he passed I could barely breathe. I felt as if I had nothing left inside me.

For Unto Us A Child Is Born

Growing up, I was never a fan of classical music. This might be because my stepfather played Handel’s Messiah every Christmas at an ear-splitting level.  To clarify, I didn’t mind the words or message, just the type of singing, and the fact that he blasted it so loud. To this day, I can still hear the words “For unto us a Child is born…Wonderful, Counselor” echoing in my brain at full volume.
