“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” Proverbs 31:25 (NIV)
Does reading about the Proverbs 31 Woman make you cringe a little? She is strong, wise, kind, fearless, and everything I used to struggle to believe about myself. Instead of feeling encouraged, I felt inadequate. I wondered how this picture of godly womanhood could apply to someone like me.
When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t see strength or beauty. I see flaws. I heard echoes of my father’s words: “Women are only good for one thing: attracting men. So they need to be beautiful and thin.” Even as a child, I knew I didn’t fit that description. I have carried those words ever since. I still remember the sting of cruel words and voices saying I’d never succeed because of my disability.
So, when I read Proverbs 31, I struggled to relate. This verse in particular felt out of reach. “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come” (Proverbs 31:25, NIV).
For a long time, I struggled to believe I could ever be like this woman. But over time, God revealed that this verse is not about measuring up. It is about who we already are in Christ.
Unpacking the meaning of these words brings this truth to light.
The Hebrew word for clothed is lᵉbûš. It means dressed, protected, or robed. Strength is ʽōz, meaning power or might. Dignity comes from hādār, which refers to majesty, splendor, and blessing, or something beautiful and awe-inspiring.
Friend, this verse is not a standard to strive for. It is a declaration of who we already are. We are clothed in strength and dignity. Thus, we can walk forward with joyful hope.
- Jesus’ salvation covers and protects us.
“I delight greatly in the Lord. My soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness” (Isaiah 61:10, NIV).
- The Holy Spirit empowers us.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8, NIV).
- We have Christ’s righteousness and reflect God’s majesty and blessing.
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21, NIV).
- God’s love and salvation bring lasting hope.
“And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5, NIV).
Friend, if you have ever felt too broken, too flawed, or not enough, remember this: You are clothed in strength and dignity, not because of what you’ve done, but because of what Jesus has done for you.
You can face the future with joy because your identity is secure in Jesus.
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for clothing me in the righteousness of Christ. When I feel weak, remind me that Your strength lives in me. When I feel unworthy, remind me that I carry Your dignity, majesty, and beauty because I belong to You. Help me see myself as You do and move forward with hope, knowing You love me deeply.
