One text changed everything, and for a moment, hope disappeared. “Hey sister, I have some rough news to share.” The doctor’s diagnosis followed this sentence, and it wasn’t good. In fact, it left little room for hope. Maybe you’ve been there too, with the phone in your hand, crying out to God, with tears rolling down your face after receiving devastating news. You wonder how you could possibly hold onto hope when circumstances tell you to give up.
The very next morning, during my quiet time with God, I came across this verse: “You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.” (Psalm 77:14, NIV). As I read those words, a quiet hope began to fill my heart. God saw my sorrow and understood my fear and helplessness. Through His Word, He reminded me I wasn’t alone, and nothing is impossible for Him (Luke 18:27).
So friend, how do we hold onto hope when our circumstances scream at us to give up and believe it’s impossible? We look to God. The God who met me in my quiet time is the same faithful God revealed throughout the Bible.
Don’t Give Up Praying
There are seasons when we pray faithfully and still see nothing change. Our hearts grow weary, and we feel like giving up. But we can take a lesson from Elijah, who prayed repeatedly for rain in 1 Kings 18.
Israel was suffering a severe drought, just as Elijah had declared would happen after King Ahab turned the nation toward idolatry. After years without rain, God told Elijah He would send it again. So Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel and began to pray.
At first, nothing happened. Elijah prayed, then sent his servant to look toward the sea: No cloud. No rain. No sign.
Elijah repeated this six times, and each time the sky remained completely clear. Yet Elijah didn’t allow the silence or the circumstances to shake his confidence in God. He kept praying. He kept believing. And on the seventh time, the servant finally saw a tiny cloud which became the beginning of the downpour God had promised.
If Elijah had stopped praying after the sixth time, Israel would have missed the blessing and powerful display of God’s faithfulness. Elijah’s persistence reminds us never to give up praying and that hope endures, even when everything tells us to quit.

Don’t Give Up Trying
The Bible tells us, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked for” (1 John 5:14-15, NIV).
This verse might lead you to think that if you pray for something, then you can sit back and wait for God to do it. However, this is not necessarily the case.
First, we need to ensure that what we are asking for aligns with God’s will. And friend, the only way to do that is to spend daily quality time seeking God and His Word. As our relationship with God grows, our will begins to align with His.
Second, God gave us gifts and talents for a reason. We can’t just sit back and expect God to do everything. God will do it, but we must do what we can as well.
A Lesson from Jesus
In His Parable of the Talents, Jesus told a story about a master who praised the servants who invested their talents wisely: “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’” (Matthew 25:21, NIV).

This story illustrates the importance of using the gifts and resources God entrusts to us. The “talents” in the parable represent not only money but also our spiritual gifts, abilities, and time. Jesus’ parable shows God values our diligence and faithfulness in using what He has provided.
So, friend, as you continue to pray and add your gifts, abilities, and effort, God will join you. So, don’t grow weary. Hold onto hope. God sees every step you take. Your diligence and perseverance will pay off. God will honor your faithfulness in His perfect timing.
As Paul said, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9, NIV).
Don’t Give Up on God – Hold Onto Hope
Friend, your struggle might not be a season of drought like Elijah experienced. It might be a wayward child, a challenging diagnosis, financial struggles, or feelings of loneliness and despair. Yet the Bible reminds us: “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act” (Psalm 37:5, ESV).
Even when God doesn’t act in the way or timing we expect, His promises remain sure. We can lean into Him, trusting that He is at work even when the answers seem delayed. As God’s Word reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV).

Don’t lose hope in God. He didn’t give up on us. Even when we were lost, hopeless, and far from Him, God showed His unfailing love through Jesus: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, NIV).
And even if not all our prayers are answered in this lifetime, we can hold onto the hope of eternity with Him, a place with no more tears, no more pain, and no more heartache (Revelation 21:4).
Dear one, hold onto hope. Keep praying, keep trusting, and keep using the gifts God has given you. Above all, trust that God’s love is unfailing, His timing is perfect, and He is always working for your good.
