“Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders.” Deuteronomy 33:12 (NIV)
This afternoon, while babysitting my grandson, I tried to settle him for a nap. Usually, he cuddles close, and I sing him to sleep. But today, he pushed away, crying and flailing his arms. I soothed him, saying, “You’ll feel happier and more peaceful if you rest. We can play again when you wake.” As I spoke, God’s Spirit gently whispered to me, “Sometimes you act just like a toddler fighting rest.” I had to smile because it was true.
Why do toddlers resist sleep? Maybe they’re overstimulated, anxious about being apart, or afraid of missing out. Adults often behave similarly for the very same reasons.
Like toddlers, we adults often struggle to unwind after busy days filled with constant stimulation or the pressure of unfinished tasks, such as checking emails and responding to messages. However, rest is as essential for us as sleep is for a child. Rest helps our body and mind recover, reducing anxiety and stress. It sharpens our thinking, improves memory, and steadies our emotions.
Dear one, we can find true rest in God’s love and care. “Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders” (Deuteronomy 33:12, NIV). When we rest in God, we can trust that He will meet our needs, protect us, and fill us with His peace.
Here is an acrostic I’ve created for the word REST to help you remember four practical steps to rest in God’s love.
- Remove distractions.
Jesus invited His disciples to quiet places to rest: “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31). Find your own quiet space to focus on God. - Engage with God.
Prayer and worship draw us into God’s presence, where our souls find peace. “My Presence will go with you and I will give you rest” (Exodus 33:14). - Surrender.
When we surrender our plans, fears, and burdens, God’s miracles can unfold. “Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you” (Psalm 55:22). Let go of control and lean on Him. - Trust.
Fix your thoughts on God, not your worries. “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3).
Friend, don’t worry if your mind drifts back to concerns. Simply return to surrender and trust as many times as needed. Whispering words of praise can also invite God’s peace and help you rest.
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for your peace and rest. When I struggle to slow down, remind me to remove distractions, engage with your presence, surrender, and trust you with every aspect of my life. Help me to rest in your love. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
