Life is a waiting game. When we are young, we can’t wait to grow up, so we can drive, vote, or drink alcohol. We attend school, earn degrees and certificates, and wait for the perfect job. Later, we marry and wait until the right time to buy a home or start a family. Sometimes, we go through tough seasons waiting for better days. But as we grow in our relationship with the Lord, the waiting becomes deeper than life’s milestones. We no longer focus on what we can achieve, earn, or plan. Instead, we trust in what only God can do. This is when we begin waiting on God for direction, healing, breakthrough, and the fulfillment of His promises.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t like waiting. I especially dislike waiting on God. When I pray for something, I sincerely hope God will immediately swoop down and make it so. But, friend, let’s face it, that’s not necessarily how God works.
The Bible promises that God hears our prayers (Jeremiah 29:12). It also tells us that when we ask according to God’s will, He will grant our requests (1 John 5:14-15). However, it does not say when or how we will have it.
Understand God’s Preparation

Waiting seasons can make us feel stuck, as if time is slipping away and our prayers are met with silence. So, the first thing we must do is understand that God often uses waiting to prepare us. Waiting seasons are rarely wasted seasons. God uses these quiet seasons to prepare us for what lies ahead. In the waiting, God does His deepest work. He shapes our character, strengthens our faith, and aligns our hearts with His will. When we understand this, we can turn our focus to Him and ask, “Lord, how do You want to grow and prepare me for what’s next?”
Think of David. God anointed him as king long before he ever wore a crown. Before stepping into his destiny, he spent years tending sheep, fending off wild animals, serving others, and even running for his life. Through every lonely night and battle, David learned to depend entirely on God. The fields and caves became his classroom for leadership and worship. By the time David finally took the throne, he was ready to rule and prepared to follow God’s heart.
Like David, we can trust that God is preparing us too. God may be developing character, refining our faith, or equipping us with the skills and strength we’ll need. Though we can’t always see it, every season has a purpose. One day, we’ll look back and realize that the waiting wasn’t a pause in God’s plan; it was part of it.
Meanwhile, let’s wait like David, “a man after God’s own heart,” who said, “I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry” (Psalm 40:1, NIV).
Understand God’s Timing
Next, we must understand that waiting isn’t only about what God is doing in us. It’s also about what He’s arranging around us. God is never late or too early. God sees the whole picture, from beginning to end, even when we can only see a small piece. Sometimes, the delay we dread is actually God’s protection. Other times, it is the pause needed for God to align the right people, place, or timing to fulfill His plan. When we grasp this, we stop striving to make things happen our way. Instead, we seek His will, trust His pace, and align our hearts with His perfect timing.
Even the world had to wait for the right time for its Redeemer. From the moment sin entered the world, creation longed for salvation (Romans 8:19). Yet God, in His wisdom, waited for the fullness of time before sending His Son. When everything aligned perfectly and hearts were ready, God sent Jesus into the world.
“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4, ESV).
We can take comfort in knowing God still works with that same precision and care in our lives. When the time is right, God will move. Until then, we can trust that He is weaving every intricate detail together for His glory and our good. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28, NIV).
Standing on God’s Promises in the Waiting

So, what are we to do in the waiting? Friend, we can stand on God’s promises. When God gives a promise, He keeps it. His faithfulness does not depend on timing, circumstances, or our understanding. We can trust God because He is good, faithful, just, merciful, and loving. “The Lord will keep all his promises. He is faithful in everything he does” (Psalm 145:13, NIRV).
We see this truth clearly throughout the Bible in the lives of those who waited patiently on God.
Abraham and Sarah – Waiting for the Promise of a Son
God promised Abraham he would be the father of many nations. Yet he and Sarah waited twenty-five years for Isaac’s birth. During those long years, God’s promise must have seemed impossible, especially given their old age and Sarah’s barrenness. Though Abraham and Sarah first tried to fulfill God’s promise in their own way through Hagar, they eventually learned to trust God’s Word and timing. In the end, God proved faithful: “And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised” (Hebrews 6:15, NIV).
Joseph – Waiting for the Fulfillment of His Dreams
Although, as a young man, God gave Joseph dreams of a powerful future, he spent many years waiting faithfully for them to unfold. His brothers betrayed him and sold him into slavery. Later, he was falsely accused and imprisoned. Through it all, God tested and refined Joseph’s character, preparing him for what lay ahead (Psalm 105:19, NLT).
Giving up would have been easy, but Joseph chose to trust God’s promises and remain faithful. In time, Pharaoh appointed Joseph to the second-highest position in Egypt, placing him in charge of the land and its resources (Genesis 41:39-41). In this role, Joseph saved many lives from famine (Gen. 50:20), including his family’s.
The Israelites – Waiting for the Promised Land

The Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years before entering the land God had promised them. In that waiting, God protected them, taught them dependence on Him, and fulfilled His promise at the appointed time. When the Israelites’ hearts were right, God helped them enter and take the Promised Land. “Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled” (Joshua 21:45, NIV).
Through all these examples, we see a clear pattern: God has kept His promises according to His perfect timing. Even when waiting on God feels long or uncertain, we can hold tightly to His Word, trusting that He is faithful to fulfill every promise.
Waiting on God When There’s No Specific Promise
In the previous biblical examples, God made an explicit promise to someone. Then, after waiting faithfully, God fulfilled His promise. But what if God hasn’t given us a specific promise? What if we are waiting for an answer to prayer or guidance in a season of uncertainty?
Dear one, even then, we can stand on the promises in God’s Word. The Bible contains 7,147 promises to His people, each offering hope, guidance, and assurance. Through Jesus and His sacrifice, God’s gift of grace gives us full access to every one of them. “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God” (2 Corinthians 1:20-21, NIV).
Hannah provides a beautiful example of waiting on God without a specific promise. She prayed earnestly for a son, pouring out her heart in faith. She did not know how or when God would answer, but she held on to Him in faith. In time, God answered Hannah’s prayer. Later, she joyfully declared, “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him” (1 Samuel 1:27, NIV).
Even when we wait without a clearly spoken promise, we can follow Hannah’s example. We can pray earnestly, trust God’s timing, and hold on to the assurances He has given us in His Word. When we pray, God always hears us and will act according to His perfect will.
Obeying While Waiting on God

Another important thing we can do in the waiting is obey the small steps God sets before us and faithfully complete the work in front of us. Even the smallest acts of obedience matter because they prepare us for the fulfillment of God’s promises.
Jesus teaches this in the parable of the talents. The master rewarded the servants who faithfully invested and used what he entrusted to them. However, the master chastised the servant who buried his talent out of fear (Matthew 25:14-30). Our faithful actions, even in small things, demonstrate our trust in God and align us with His purposes.
The story of Noah offers a powerful example of obedience while waiting on God. The Lord commanded Noah to build the ark. Long before there was any sign of a flood, he obeyed fully. “Noah did everything just as God commanded him” (Genesis 6:22, NIV). For years, he worked faithfully, patiently, and obediently, trusting God’s plan. Then, in God’s perfect timing, deliverance came.
Like Noah, we can also focus on obedience to the tasks God places before us during our time of waiting. It doesn’t matter if we can’t see the results yet. Each step of faithful obedience becomes part of God’s greater work. As we trust God and follow His guidance, He positions us to experience His deliverance and the fulfillment of His promises.
Obeying and Standing on God’s Promises in Real Life
When my daughter was 12, she attended summer camp and chose Jesus as her Savior. But sadly, as she got older, peer pressure led her to alcohol and drugs and away from Him. I have prayed for her for years, longing for her healing and return to the Lord.
Now, 16 years later, she still struggles. But I pray daily and haven’t given up hope. Just because God hasn’t answered my prayers yet doesn’t mean He isn’t working on my daughter’s behalf. I trust that He will answer my prayers according to His plan and perfect timing. In the meantime, I choose to step forward in faith, trusting God to heal her heart and break the chains of depression and addiction that hold her captive.
I know God’s Word is always true, so I stand on these words of wisdom:
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6, NKJV).
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:27-28, NIV).
I know my daughter is saved. Therefore, one day I will rejoice with God when she is free and standing beside me, even if I have to wait until we are both in heaven. For now, I will continue to obey God’s calling on my life by sharing my faith and writing about God’s goodness, trusting that His timing and ways are perfect.
Standing in Hope While Waiting on God
Waiting on God can be hard. It stretches our patience, tests our faith, and sometimes leaves us wondering whether God is at work. But as we’ve seen in the examples from Scripture, there is hope because God always keeps His promises, and His timing is perfect.

Dear one, even when we don’t see the outcome yet, we can stand on the promises in God’s Word. We can obey the steps He places before us and trust that He is working in ways we cannot yet understand. God is faithful, and His love never fails. Just as the rainbow reminds us of His covenant with creation (Genesis 9:13-15), signs of His faithfulness surround us. We only need to keep watching, trusting, and obeying.
Let’s continue to wait with hope, stand firm on God’s promises, and trust that He will act at the perfect time. Our God is faithful. He keeps His promises. Stand with me today and say, “But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me” (Micah 7:7, NIV).
