Discover the Power in the Name of Jesus

There is incredible power in the name of Jesus.

Have you ever found yourself overwhelmed by fear, anxiety, or sorrow, and you didn’t even know what to pray? In those moments, there is power in the name of Jesus — power that brings peace when chaos surrounds you, strength when you’re weak, and hope when you feel lost.

Sometimes, when words fail us, the most powerful prayer we can offer is simply a single name: Jesus.

Using His Name and Authority

Let me show you what this looks like in real life.

My husband had been to several doctors and specialists for an ear infection and fluid in his ear that was causing him to lose his hearing. He had taken their medications and followed their advice. Then, we had prayed repeatedly for healing. Yet his hearing in the left ear still hadn’t returned.

Then one Sunday, after hearing a sermon about the authority we have in the name of Jesus, I decided to put it into practice. Though I felt a little silly, I laid my hand on his ear and gently whispered, “In the name of Jesus and His authority, restore his hearing.”

Amazingly, within two days, the infection vanished, and his hearing was fully restored.

There is incredible power in the name of Jesus.

When we speak His name over our lives, we’re not just repeating words; we are calling on the authority of the King of kings, the One before whom every knee will bow (Philippians 2:10).

His name shines light into our darkest places, brings peace into our storms, heals our deepest wounds, and fills us with hope when all seems lost.

The worship song “I Speak Jesus” by Charity Gayle beautifully captures this truth:

I just want to speak the name of Jesus

This song reminds us that speaking the name of Jesus isn’t just poetic, it’s powerful. Jesus’ name breaks every chain. He is never distant from our pain. Additionally, He draws close to the brokenhearted and gently binds up every wound we thought might never heal.

Jesus’ Mission: Healing, Freedom, Restoration

Long before Jesus came, the prophet Isaiah spoke of His purpose:

“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.” (Isaiah 61:1–3, NIV)

This is His heart for you: freedom, healing, peace, and restoration.

Centuries later, Jesus stood in a synagogue and declared that this prophecy had been fulfilled in Him (Luke 4:16-21). This wasn’t just His mission back then; it’s still His mission today.

This is His heart for you: freedom, healing, peace, and restoration.

What It Means to Speak His Name

So what exactly does it mean when we say there is power in the name of Jesus?

  • First, Jesus’ name carries divine authority that transforms lives.
  • Secondly, speaking His name is invoking the presence of the living God.
  • Finally, Jesus’ name carries power over fear, shame, sickness, sorrow, sin, and everything that tries to hold us captive.

The Authority in His Name

  • Jesus’ name is above every name.
    • “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” (Philippians 2:10, NIV)
  • Demons flee at His name.
    • “Even the demons submit to us in your name” (Luke 10:17, NIV).
  • Salvation comes through His name.
    • “There is no other name… by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12, NIV).
  • Healing happens in His name.
    • “It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him that has completely healed him” (Acts 3:16, NIV).
  • Prayers are answered in His name.
    • “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (John 14:14, NIV).

We Share in His Authority

But here’s the beautiful truth: Jesus didn’t stop there. He gave His followers the authority to walk in His name:

We can proclaim it with bold confidence

“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you” (Luke 10:19, NIV).

We don’t need a title, position, or microphone to carry His power. All we need is faith in the One who gave us His name.

Because of this, we don’t have to speak His name with wishful thinking. We can proclaim it with bold confidence, knowing we carry His spiritual authority wherever we go.

Whispers of His Name in Everyday Moments

  • When fear grips our hearts, we can whisper the name of Jesus. He brings peace (John 14:27).
  • When the storms of life are raging, we can declare the name of Jesus. He is our refuge and deliverer.  (Psalm 18:2).
  • When our hearts are heavy, His name brings comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3–4).
  • When our sins and regrets hold us hostage, we can call His Name. He brings freedom (John 8:36).
  • When we speak His name over our families, He brings restoration (Acts 16:31).

Carry His Name with Confidence

Dear one, let this become the quiet cry of our hearts:

Jesus, You are our peace, our healer, our Savior, and our freedom.

We speak Your name over every part of our lives.

We follow where You lead us, carrying Your name, Your power, and Your love.

God created us to carry the power in the name of Jesus boldly.

Friend, we were never meant to live weighed down by fear or held captive by bondage. God created us to carry His name with joy, to walk boldly in His power, and to be vessels of His freedom and love to those around us.

Therefore, let us choose to speak the name of Jesus with boldness and calm assurance. Let’s declare it over our home, health, heart, and relationships. Since there is power in the name of Jesus, it is the very life and strength we carry within us every single day.
